FAQs

It’s nice to know your beeswax.

How can we help?

Our Candles

What is the difference between beeswax and paraffin candles?

Paraffin is a toxic byproduct of the oil industry. Paraffin candles are cheaper than beeswax candles, but they are made from a nonrenewable resource: petroleum. Burning them gives off many of the same toxic fumes found in auto exhaust. Paraffin candles are relatively short burning, excessively drippy, and produce a disorganized light spectrum similar to old-fashioned incandescent bulbs. The petrol soot they produce can eventually stain surfaces in your home. They are often filled with artificial fragrances and colors which also produce toxins and stains when burned.

I’ve had trouble burning other beeswax candles — will I have the same problem with Beeswax Co. candles?

Beeswax must be clean to burn properly. Our beeswax is as clean as it comes. We gently filter our beeswax to siphon off any impurities — even down to the size of a grain of pollen — without chemicals or bleach. We take the time and care needed to ensure that our long-lasting beeswax candles burn well.

What kind of wicks do you use in your beeswax candles?

We take care to use only 100% cotton wicks for the most healthful flame possible. We’ve tested for best burn quality to choose the right cotton wick for each of our candle designs. See our candle care tips for more information on making your candles last.

Why does the surface of my Beeswax Co. candle appear to have dust or a film on it?

This is a good indicator that you’ve got a pure beeswax candle. As natural oils present in beeswax come to the surface, it’s called bloom. Bloom can be removed by wiping the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth. As a burning tip, it’s always a good idea to gently wipe the top of your candle — being careful not to break the wick — before burning.

Do you add artificial ingredients to your beeswax candles?

We keep our beeswax 100% pure. We never add artificial scents or toxic colorants. We gently filter our beeswax to siphon off any impurities — even down to the size of a grain of pollen — without chemicals or bleach. Every step of our process is designed to bring out the natural beauty of beeswax, period.

How and where do you make your beeswax candles?

Our shop is located in Dripping Springs, Texas. We work exclusively with Texas beekeepers to collect our 100% pure domestic beeswax. Beeswax Co. has been proudly producing 100% pure beeswax candles in Texas since 1997. We love it here.

Why does my Beeswax Co. candle measure slightly smaller than the size stated on your site?

Our candle sizes are based on our molds. We hand-pour 100% pure beeswax into the mold, then the candle shrinks somewhat as it cools. Size variations are usually around 1/4”.

Do you use chemicals to process your beeswax?

Absolutely not. We gently filter our beeswax to siphon off any impurities — even down to the size of a grain of pollen — without chemicals or bleach.

What can I do with my leftover beeswax candle stubs or scraps?

You can turn leftover beeswax into household goods that are good for you with our simple beeswax recipes. We also happily accept your beeswax donations — we clean donated beeswax and pour fresh candles that we give to charitable organizations right here in Texas.

What makes beeswax candles better than other kinds?

Beeswax candles burn longer than other kinds of candles and do not drip. Beeswax candles emit a bright, healthful light with the same light spectrum as the sun. They also emit negative ions that actually clean the air and invigorate the body. Beeswax candles are naturally scented by nectar of flowers and honey packed into the honeycomb from which they are made. They come from a 100% natural and renewable resource: beeswax.

How long does beeswax stay good?

Forever! But, our candles perform best when used within a year because, like most natural products, 100% pure beeswax can change over time. Dust and dirt collecting on the surface, extreme temperature changes, the age of the all-natural wick, and a phenomenon called bloom can affect beeswax candles over time. See our candle care tips for more information on making your candles last.

Where does beeswax come from?

Beeswax is a 100% natural substance made by bees. Bees collect nectar and pollen to make honey to feed the hive. As they eat honey, their bodies make wax. Chewing this wax with a little more honey, the bees build combs designed to store extra honey for the hive. When the time is just right, beekeepers open these “honey pantries” to collect the honey. We work with Texas beekeepers to collect spent combs — then we clarify the beeswax to handcraft our 100% pure beeswax candles.
