Basic Candle Safety
- Never burn a candle that is not within sight.
- Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents.
- Never touch or move a candle when the wax is liquid.
- Never burn a candle directly on or near anything flammable.
- Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use.
- Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
- Trim candlewicks to one quarter inch each time before burning.
- Make sure all candles are completely out before leaving the room.
- Straighten the wick after it has been extinguished.
- While beeswax never expires, the burning qualities of a beeswax candle can change over time. For best results, use candles within one year.
Burning Tips by Candle Type
One Wick Pillar Candles
- Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4″ or less to prevent soot.
- Ensure candle is kept clean and doesn’t gather dirt or excess dust. If dirty or dusty, carefully clean the top of your candle with paper towel or lint free cloth.
- To ensure your candle burns cleanly across the top, burn it one hour for each inch in diameter or until the wax pool extends from edge to edge. For example, burn a 2.5″ pillar at least 2.5 hours, burn a 4″ pillar at least 4 hours.
- Use a metal tool to straighten a curled or tilted wick to the opposite direction to correct uneven burning.
- Extinguish candle by pushing wick into melted wax pool with a metal tool preventing afterglow and smoke.
Three Wick Pillar Candles
- Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4″ or less to prevent soot.
- Ensure candle is kept clean and doesn’t gather dirt or excess dust. If dirty or dusty, carefully clean the top of your candle with paper towel or lint free cloth.
- Always burn all 3 wicks at the same time.
- To ensure your candle burns cleanly across the top, burn 3-wick candles until all three beeswax pools join to form one large wax pool (usually from 6 to 9 hours). Repeat the process each time the candle is lit.
- Use a metal tool to straighten curled or tilted wicks to the opposite direction to correct uneven burning.
- Extinguish candle by pushing wicks into melted wax pool with a metal tool preventing afterglow and smoke.
Votives
- Votive candles should always be burned in a proper heat resistant votive holder slightly larger in diameter than the votive itself. Votive candles are meant to burn completely and will not contain their wax pool.
- Before adding a votive to its holder pour in a few drops of water to just cover the bottom of the container. This will make cleanup easy.
- Use a metal tool to extinguish a votive by pushing the wick into the wax pool.
Tea Light Candles
- Always burn tea light candles in their aluminum containers or in a similar heat resistant container. Tea lights are meant to burn continuously until depleted, usually 3 to 5 hours.
- Use a metal tool to extinguish a tea light by pushing the wick into the wax pool.
Candlesticks and Tapered Candlesticks
- Always burn our 100% pure beeswax tapers and candlesticks in a secure, stable, heat resistant Taper or Candlestick holder. Even our large diameter Candlesticks should not be burned unless secured in an appropriately sized candle holder.
- Extinguish candlesticks and tapers with a candle snuffer.
How to Extinguish Your Candle
Blowing a candle out can spatter liquid wax or introduce unwanted debris to the wax. Instead, use a wick dipper to depress the lighted wick into the wax pool. Once the flame is extinguished, use the dipper to return the wick to an upright position. Always make sure all candles are completely out before leaving the room.
What about leftover beeswax candle stubs or scraps?
Whatever we do, we strive to put every bit of beeswax to good use. Between our beeswax recipes and our beeswax recycling program, you can do the same.
We happily accept your beeswax donations. Once we’ve collected enough donated beeswax, we carefully clean it and pour fresh candles that we give to charitable organizations right here in Texas.
