National Honey Bee Day
Did you know the U.S. celebrates dozens of holidays focused on animals and insects? To name a few, January 5th is National Bird Day, March 14th is Save a Spider Day and November 3rd is Jellyfish Day.
The third Saturday in August is recognized as National Honey Bee Day. The event was started in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers who petitioned for a holiday honoring honey bees and beekeeping. That same year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officially proclaimed August 22nd as the first National Honey Bee Awareness Day (also known as National Honey Bee Day).
As a result of this holiday, the National Honey Bee Day (NHBD) program emerged. The NHBD program is an organization devoted to building community awareness of honey bees, beekeeping, the bee industry, and the environmental concerns affecting honey bees.
In celebration of the holiday, the NHBD program continues the tradition of announcing a new theme each year—reflecting current challenges and opportunities in bee conservation. For 2025, National Honey Bee Day is observed on Saturday, August 16. The theme, “Beekeepers for the Planet,” highlights the essential role that beekeepers play in sustaining ecosystems and empowering pollinator health far beyond honey production.
While many organizations still mark the occasion on the original date of August 22, we believe that both dates—and truly every day—are perfect for honoring and protecting bees.
How The Beeswax Co. Supports Bees Year-Round
At The Beeswax Co., our work with bees extends far beyond the wax in our candles. We partner with local beekeepers who practice sustainable beekeeping with a focus on honeybee longevity, ensuring hives stay healthy season after season. We also participate in community educational events and provide resources to hobby beekeepers eager to begin their own sustainable journey.
Our commitment doesn’t stop there: we donate to ongoing bee research that advances understanding of hive health, environmental stressors, and pollinator resilience. Around our facilities—and in our own backyards—we plant native, pollinator-friendly plants that are non-GMO and pesticide-free, creating safe forage for bees year-round.
And of course, every one of our 100% pure beeswax candles supports this mission—crafted from wax sourced responsibly from beekeepers who share our values.
